About us
RJS Smart Security is based in Minneapolis, Minnesota and utilizes a "lean security" model to provide agile security consulting and assistance, as well as sale and implementation of industry-leading security products. After several years of successful growth as a part of RJS Software, RJS Smart Security branched off as its own business unit in December of 2011. RJS Smart Security is a subsidiary of
RJS Software Systems, a leading developer of document management software.

Richard Schoen
President and Chief Technology Officer
Richard founded RJS Software Systems in 1990 and developed the company's first commercial software product, the AS/400 Report Splitter soon after. Today as Chief Technology Officer, Richard guides the direction and development of all core RJS products and technology.
Richard is an industry expert on many aspects of business information technology and has authored whitepapers, articles and other technical publications. He is also a frequent speaker at trade shows, seminars and other computer and technology industry events. With over 25 years of development experience on all system platforms including IBM iSeries, Windows and Linux, Richard has a unique perspective that keeps RJS products well positioned to take advantage of growth opportunities in today’s rapidly changing markets.
Mike Bergstrom
General Manager
Mike joined RJS Software in March of 2009 and currently oversees the RJS Smart Security team, as well as RJS Software's daily operations. From 2004 - 2008, Mike served as CEO of English, Bleeker and Associates, Inc. (EBA), which had three distinct business platforms in software development, technology education, and consulting. During his tenure with EBA, the organization grew from annual revenue of $750,000 to $10.5 million.
From 1995 – 2003, Mike held various senior management positions with Chart Industries in the areas of sales, marketing and international business development.
Josh More, CISSP, GIAC-GSLC Gold, GIAC-GCIH
Senior Security Consultant
As a Senior Security Consultant, Josh brings more than 15 years of experience in IT and security to RJS Smart Security. He holds multiple security and technical certifications and serves in a leadership position on several security-focused groups. When taking a break from reducing IT and security risks for our customers, Josh enjoys reading, cooking and photography.

Bill Whalen
Data Security Sales
Bill Whalen is a Senior Sales Executive for RJS Smart Security and their parent company, RJS Software Systems. In his seven years at RJS, Bill has served as a key technology liaison between the company and IBM and has specialized in selling complex ECM and AP automation solutions. Bill plays a leading role in the development and direction of all RJS products and security solutions.
Kevin Costello
Data Security Sales
Kevin Costello brings 10 years of professional sales experience to the RJS team. A graduate of Drake University, he got his start in technology and software by assisting customers with network security initiatives. Kevin has a strong passion for sales and an even stronger passion for helping those around him. When not at work you can find him outdoors next to a tent, boat, fishing pole, grill or campfire with his trusty Bulldog named Chief.
Leigh Reimers
Technical Engineer
If RJS Smart Security employed “The Most Interesting Man in the World,” one could argue our very own Network Security Engineer, Leigh Reimers, just might fit the bill. Leigh is a black-belt karate master and former United States Army tough guy. A “jack-of-all-trades,” Leigh often assists with product installation and support on the off-chance he isn’t solving more complex security conundrums as a certified Sophos Advanced Sales and Technology Engineer.
Joel Sawyer
Marketing Manager
An avid supporter of the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers, Joel develops and manages all marketing initiatives for RJS Smart Security. He also serves as Editor-in-Chief of our blog and regularly contributes RJS Smart Security news and interesting technology notes. While at RJS, Joel founded a consumer media company called JLS Media, where he specializes in the resale of hard-to-find history, war and western books and movies. Outside of work, Joel enjoys biking, hot yoga, APBA and rocking out to his favorite band, Muse.
